Statement on Accuracy
“Quotation, n.: The act of repeating erroneously the words of another.” ~Ambrose Bierce
Some quotes on this site were submitted by visitors. I often take contributors on their word that the information they give me is accurate. Therefore, please be forewarned of the possibility of inaccurate wordings and attributions. Reporting of errors is greatly appreciated, see contact info below.
Guidelines of Use
“What is right is often forgotten by what is convenient.” ~Bodie Thoene
Quotegarden.com is an original compilation encompassing 22 years of hard work. The site design and categorization are copyright; please do not reproduce entire categories or large portions of the site without permission and acknowledgment. Thank you for your respect in cooperation.
Copyright and Permissions
“All my best thoughts were stolen by the ancients.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
The question I'm asked most is about copyright and permissions, from people working on projects to be published. Requests for permission to use individual quotes must go through the original authors or their publishing companies. I am not familiar with the copyright guidelines for using individual quotations in published materials such as greeting cards and calendars. You might start by searching Google for "copyright," "fair use" or "fair dealing," contacting the author's publishing company, contacting an attorney, or using only works from authors who died more than 95 years ago, in which case the copyright has likely expired. As far as I am aware, compilations such as this site and other quotation anthologies are covered under fair use.
Citation Information
“I have gathered a posie of other men's flowers and nothing but the thread which binds them is my own.” ~Michel Eyquem de Montaigne
Below is the website information necessary for citations, if you need to reference us in a works cited list or bibliography. Please keep in mind the above Statement on Accuracy if using quotations from this site; it's always best in scholarly writing to quote from the original source, when possible. The Quote Garden is meant to be casual enjoyment for word lovers, not a scholarly reference.
